Abstract

Description

Assessment for Learning (AfL) is a critical formative approach that integrates assessment into the teaching and learning process to enhance the quality of teacher pedagogy and student achievement. However, inconsistencies in AfL practices have created significant issues in the implementation of Classroom Assessment (PBD). This qualitative study therefore aims to explore the attitudes and knowledge of Bahasa Melayu teachers towards AfL practices at Chinese National-Type Schools (SJKC) in the Southern Zone of Sarawak. The study employed a multiple case study design. A total of six Stage Two Bahasa Melayu teachers from six different SJKCs participated, selected through a combination of purposive and snowball sampling techniques. Research instruments included semi-structured interviews and document analysis, with data analysed thematically. Findings confirm that teachers generally hold positive attitudes and possess strong foundational knowledge about AfL. However, these two teacher characteristics do not align consistently with comprehensive practice, as teachers face challenges related to heavy workload and highperformance pressure, ultimately leading to a decline in their positive attitude. This study carries practical implications regarding the need for support tailored to the SJKC context. Thus, it is recommended that continuous and focused support from the Ministry of Education Malaysia (KPM) and school management be strengthened to ensure AfL is implemented effectively and with quality. Further research is also recommended to utilize a mixedmethods approach and involve student perspectives.
