| dc.description | Visual art possesses a unique quality that transcends time, continually captivating audiences, as noted by Othman (2017). Visual artworks often require deep contemplation from viewers to fully appreciate the emotions as well as the explicit and implicit meanings conveyed by the artist. While not all artworks are widely known, art within places of worship, for instance, tends to be more exclusive to its devotees. Various previous studies, such as those by Sasongko (2012), Giebelhausen (2006), Fairus & Halim (2016), Othman (2017), and Khayril Anwar (2016), emphasize the inseparable relationship between art and religion. This study aims to explore the connection between art and Christianity in Sabah, Malaysia, particularly within the Roman Catholic tradition. A qualitative approach was employed through observation, literature review, and unstructured interviews conducted at three early Roman Catholic churches in Sabah: St. Mary’s Church in Sandakan, St. Michael’s Church in Penampang, and the Sacred Heart Church in Kota Kinabalu. This research documented two stained glass artworks and six murals found within the churches, all of which reference the Bible as a primary source, depicting recurring characters in different physical forms. The study also discovered an adaptation of symbols and signs in each subject, reflecting the influence of Medieval art and clear symbolism, as discussed by Russell (1989). Symbolism in these artworks carries profound meaning, particularly within the context of religious art. Panofsky’s theory was applied to analyze the church paintings through three stages: pre-iconography, intermediate iconography, and final iconography, with imagery such as halos, winged figures, colors, doves, lambs, hearts, and hand gestures conveying deeper meaning. | |
