Abstract

Description

The benefits of parental involvement in driver education has been harnessed by many developed countries through Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL). However, the initiative of getting parents to involve in novice teen driving is not done in Malaysia. Hence, this research aims to engage parents in novice teen driving and to test the hypothesis on the effects of Malaysian parental involvement in the driving knowledge of their novice teen drivers. The aspects of driving which are feasible for parental involvement was identified using content analysis and activity analysis of Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) programs. A handbook for parental involvement in novice teen driving was produced based on SOI Model of Learning. CAPE model of Parental Engagement (Piotrowska, 2016) was utilised as the theoretical framework for this multiple-group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design study. This research reports on the outcomes and the effects of a total of 124 participants consisting of teen drivers and their parents participated in this study. The outcome of this study revealed that there is a significant effect in parental involvement on the driving knowledge in novice teen drivers, suggesting that parents can have considerable positive influence on their novice teen drivers’ driving knowledge.
