Abstract

Description

Database systems are fundamental in undergraduate computer science programs, yet students often struggle with database concepts and design, which are crucial for developing modern information systems. Traditional teaching methods frequently fail to engage students, leading to low participation and motivation. To address this challenge, this project explores the use of gamification through a Game-Based Learning Web Application to enhance engagement and improve learning outcomes in a database course. The proposed web application transforms database learning into an interactive experience, incorporating game mechanics such as challenges, real-time leaderboards, and collaborative problemsolving. By integrating an escape room concept, students navigate interactive narratives and solve progressively complex problems, fostering group work and reinforcing theoretical knowledge in an active environment. A questionnaire was distributed to assess student behavior, revealing that the complexity of database concepts presents notable challenges to students. These findings highlight the importance of targeted support and gamified assessments in enhancing engagement and learning outcomes in database courses. Findings indicate that gamification effectively enhances student motivation, engagement, and proficiency in database concepts, offering a compelling alternative to traditional instructional methods. This research offers valuable insights and presents significant implications for educators seeking to enhance their teaching strategies in database education while also improving students' learning experiences.
