Abstract

Description

The agricultural sector in Malaysia especially oil palm estates nowadays are facing many challenges in the rapidly changing world of globalisation. Some of the challenges include are limited information about current technology, and reliance on traditional operational practices. Throughout some investigation, these problems can be solved by using internet of things (IoT) and data analytics. The proposed solution involves designing and developing SmartPalmBot, a multifunctional, rover-like IoT device equipped with sensors to monitor environmental parameters such as temperature and humidity. The project had more than 85% accuracy for predicting the deviations of the environmental factors from their optimal ranges (24°C–28°C, 60%–80% RH), to provide early warning and intervention. The average SUS score was 92.5, which corresponds to "Excellent" in usability. In the UEQ analysis, the six user experience characteristics yielded values above the neutral point and the Efficiency (mean = 1.61, SD = 0.71) and Stimulation (mean = 1.50, SD = 0.67) were rated as Excellent whereas the Attractiveness, Perspicuity, and Dependability were rated as Good. Innovation is just under the 'Good' marker (mean = 0.77; SD = 1.08), indicating an opportunity for further innovation. These results demonstrate the SmartPalmBot increases decision making and user satisfaction in oil palm plantation management, which promotes sustainable and smart agriculture.
