Abstract
Description
Microwave imaging has been extensively studied in the past several years as a new technique for early stage breast cancer detection. The reason of microwave imaging for breast cancer detection is significant contrast in the dielectric properties of normal tissue and malignant tumour. Time-domain inverse-scattering technique referred as Forward-Backward Time-Stepping (FBTS) method is applied to microwave imaging breast cancer detection. The FBTS algorithm is implemented in C++ language executed in parallel computing by developing the time-domain form of the Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD). In practice, noise present from the environments during screening or examination degrades the quality of the image. Noise has high spectrum than the spectrum of the field of data. High frequency effect can be reduced by introducing an iterative inversion technique integrated with Chebyshev low pass filter. Coupling medium plays an important role as a medium to transfer and enhance the electromagnetic energy to the object. This thesis discusses the efficacy and the stability of the filter algorithm when the object immersed in various mediums such as Saline, Sodium Meta Silicate (SMS) gel and corn syrup including free space using an anatomically realistic 2-D numerical breast. The research outcomes show that the Saline solution has been found to be the most suitable media for enhancing the coupling of electromagnetic energy as well as increasing the resolution among the four mediums. The SMS gel provides poor coupling of electromagnetic energy and significant reflection while corn syrup have been identified as suitable coupling media in microwave imaging.
