Abstract

Description

Films are one of the medium used to convey messages through the acting of actors. Classic film such as film directed and acted by P. Ramlee use a lot of implicit dialogue that cannot be translated literally. Therefore, this study was conducted to examine the implicit dialogue in P. Ramlee’s film using the inquisitive semantic approach from the pragmatic field that emphasizes the interpretation of meaning. The two objectives of this study are to identify implicit utterances and further analyze the thought and intellectuality of the Malay community in the implicit speech of P. Ramlee’s films. This qualitative and descriptive study and content analysis utilizing transcribed dialogues from selected P. Ramlee’s films. 10 films and 20 data were analyzed which is two data are represented by each film. The identified implicit dialogues were then analyzed using three stages namely script semantic, resonance semantic and inquisitive semantic. The underlying theory for meaning extraction is relevance theory by Sperber and Wilson (1986, 1995) and was aided by a Bridging Cross Reference by Kempson (1986). The study found that there are elements thought and intellect of the Malay community embedded in implicit dialogue. Certain lexical items in implicit dialogue also have their own reasons for being used. Ultimately, the use of implicit dialogue in P. Ramlee’s film clearly reflects the Malay community itself.
