Abstract
Description
Previous research has explored the individual impacts of birth order on self-esteem and career readiness, but few studies have investigated these variables in combination, especially within the Malaysian context. This study aimed to examine the relationship between birth order and career readiness through the mediation of self-esteem. A survey was conducted among 160 UNIMAS students (first born, n=48; middle born, n=66; last born, n=46) and the data were collected using RSES and CFI, which distributed both online and physical means. The findings show that birth order does not influence their career readiness, even with the mediation of self-esteem (p=0.102) and self-esteem weakly correlates with career readiness (p<0.001). This study enriches the understanding of birth order effects on career readiness by integrating self-esteem as a potential mediator and providing insights within a Malaysian context. The results highlight the need for further research on additional mediating factors and suggest employing mixed method approaches to capture deeper insights into the participants’ experiences.
