Abstract

Description

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between parental expectations (support, interference, disengagement) and vocational decision-making among university students in Malaysia. It also examined gender as a moderating factor. Research data was collected using an online survey, with 375 undergraduate students from the University of Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) participating in this quantitative study. Descriptive and inferential statistics were obtained through data analysis using IBM SPSS Statistics 26. The descriptive analysis provided information on participants’ gender, race, age, faculty, year of study, CGPA, and socioeconomic status. Inferential analysis included stepwise regression and hierarchical regression analyses. The findings revealed that parental expectations significantly affect vocational decision-making among UNIMAS students. However, there was no significant difference in the impact of parental expectations on vocational decision-making between female and male undergraduate students. This study underscores the importance of understanding parental influences on students' vocational choices.
