Abstract
Description
This study aimed to explore the interpretation of depressive symptoms among Kadazan women patients and examines the cultural influences that affect their experience with Major Depressive Disorder. Eight Kadazan women from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, were recruited for semi-structured interviews. The data were analysed using thematic analysis, identifying key themes related to expression of depression, cultural and religious influences, and help-seeking behaviours. The findings reveal that depression affects the lives of the participants through somatization of symptoms. The participants also face considerable challenges in religious and cultural contexts as persons diagnosed with depression. There are also cultural nuances when seeking treatment for their disorders. Ethical considerations, such as informed consent and confidentiality were upheld. Through this study, light is shed on the experiences of Kadazan women as they navigate life in a collectivistic society.
