Abstract

Description

This qualitative study explores the challenges faced by registered counsellors in managing marriage issues in Sarawak. Through semi-structured interviews with three experienced counsellors working in various settings, the research identifies key obstacles such as client resistance, unequal participation of spouses, and stigma associated with counselling. Contributing factors include internal limitations, such as gaps in specialised knowledge and handling religious or spiritual issues, as well as external influences like family interference. The study also examines counsellors’ experiences, highlighting emotional burdens, the need for flexible and culturally sensitive interventions, and ongoing professional development requirements. The findings underscore the importance of enhancing training programs, developing culturally and religiously informed counselling practices, and strengthening institutional support systems. These insights aim to improve counselling service delivery and support the well-being of couples and families within Sarawak’s diverse cultural and religious context.
