Abstract
Description
This study was conducted to explore the counseling approaches used by counselors in sessions with clients who are visually impaired. Individuals with visual impairments often face barriers in accessing conventional counseling services due to limitations in visual accessibility, lack of inclusive materials, and insufficient understanding among counselors. This qualitative study employed semi-structured interviews with two registered counselors who themselves are visually impaired. The data were analyzed thematically, resulting in several key themes including challenges in counseling sessions, techniques and approaches applied, and recommendations for service improvement. The findings revealed that counselors must be flexible in selecting appropriate approaches, adapt existing techniques, and possess strong verbal communication skills to effectively meet the needs of visually impaired clients. The study also highlighted the role of assistive technology and the importance of professional training in inclusive counseling. This research is expected to contribute to the enhancement of counseling services for individuals with visual impairments in Malaysia.
