Abstract

Description

This study investigates the economic spillovers and determinants of cross-border trade in Serikin, Sarawak, a small but significant border town along the Malaysia-Indonesia border. The research focuses on identifying the secondary economic impacts of cross-border trade, such as social and cultural impacts, factors affecting trade dynamic, and trade-off between economic benefit and vulnerability. Utilizing a quantitative research approach, data was collected through surveys of traders, and residents involved in Serikin's cross-border trade activities. The findings reveal that strategic policies, efficient infrastructure, strong cultural ties, and stable geopolitical relations are crucial in facilitating trade and generating positive economic spillovers. This study provides valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders to enhance trade efficiency and economic development in border regions, contributing to the broader understanding of cross-border trade dynamics in Southeast Asia.
