Abstract
Description
Although many factors can cause counseling students to develop mental illness, it is indispensable that the family environment and social support are crucial in shaping a person's mental health. We can explore how family and social support affect mental health in many ways. This study examines the relationship of family environment on mental health with a moderating of social support among undergraduate counseling students in Unimas. A minimum of 43 students counseling undergraduate students from Unimas have been voluntarily involved in this study. Questionnaires have been distributed to the participants through Google Forms. Questionnaires used the family communication pattern scale, family environment scale, Mental health screening tools, and Multidimensional scale of perceived social support. The results indicate that the family environment and social support, for example, parental hostility, the quality of the parental relationship, the family's economic capacity, and family values, appear to have a significant relationship with mental health. This study found that the most critical factor affecting the mental health of counseling students in the family was the parenting style, followed by the family's communication pattern. Secondly, the study found that social support also affects students' mental health problems. A pilot test was conducted to ensure the validity of the questions, and a substantial sample size was used to enhance result accuracy. This study offers valuable insights into how the family environment and social support influence the mental health of counseling students, providing a foundation for further research and intervention strategies.
