Abstract

Description

This research explores the awareness and perceptions of retirement planning among Generation Z employees in Malaysia through a qualitative lens. Guided by the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) and the Integrative Life Planning (ILP) model, semi-structured interviews with ten participants revealed that while young employees acknowledge the importance of retirement planning, many face challenges such as limited income, low financial literacy and viewing retirement as a distant concern. The research found that personal attitudes, social influences and perceived control over finances significantly shape retirement planning behaviours. Additionally, participants associated retirement with broader life goals such as peace, freedom and family well-being, highlighting the need for a more holistic approach to financial education. This research contributes to the field of Human Resource Development by advocating for early financial literacy, workplace education and policy support. It aligns with Malaysia MADANI’s value of kesejahteraan and supports Sustainable Development Goals 1, 4 and 8 by promoting financial resilience, inclusive education and long-term economic well-being.
