Abstract
Description
User-Generated Content (UGC) has emerged as a significant contributor to the cultural landscape, increasingly shaped by technological advancements. Notably, young individuals exhibit a propensity to express emotions, often influenced by the desire to portray an idealized version of their lives in the virtual realm. This study investigates emotional expression, the motivations behind such expressions on social media, and the subsequent implications of these emotional disclosures. In-depth interviews were conducted with 10 Informants, selected through snowball sampling techniques, who met the study's criteria. The findings reveal that social media serves as a crucial medium for young individuals to express emotions, influenced by factors such as platform suitability, privacy levels, and user culture. Youth are more inclined to express negative emotions on platforms like X and WhatsApp, whereas Instagram is predominantly used to showcase positive emotions. The choice of social media platforms for emotional expression not only reflects the technical functionalities of these platforms but also underscores how young individuals perceive and adapt to social norms within the digital media ecosystem. However, there are notable implications for the mental well-being of the Informants, including feelings of fear, inferiority, shame, and emotional distress following their social media disclosures, often due to discomfort with the social judgments rendered by other users. Future research is recommended to explore the differences in emotional expression and disclosure motivations across different generations, such as Gen Z, Millennials, and Gen X, to better understand how social media usage and emotional expression vary with age. Additionally, future studies could examine the role of algorithms and artificial intelligence (AI) in shaping emotional expression and interactions on social media, including how these algorithms influence the content users are exposed to and the subsequent impact on mental well-being.
