Abstract
This guide to the turtles of South Asia includes information on freshwater turtles and tortoises in the region. There are currently 364 species of turtle and tortoise globally, more than 50% of which are threatened with extinction. The recorded turtles of South Asia are represented by three families: Geoemydidae (Freshwater Hardshell- 27), Testudinidae (Terrestrial Hardshell-8) and Trionychidae (Freshwater Softshell- 13). In South Asia, a total of 48 species of turtles have been reported. Each species is illustrated with one or more colour photographs. The species information comprises geographical range, size, identification, habit, habitat, reproduction and threats. Natural history information provided here is based on observations of the authors and published literature. A checklist of the turtles of South Asia is also incorporated in the guide, which is based on published literature. This book was designed for general to field practitioners such as students, forest staff, nature guide, researchers etc. towards understanding the little known turtle of the region.
