Advocacy and global initiatives for neuroanesthesia in resource-limited countries

Abstract

This chapter discusses the critical role of advocacy for neuroanesthesia in improving patient outcomes for neurological disorders in resource-limited countries (low- and middle-income countries [LMICs]). Addressing challenges such as epidemiological burden, workforce shortages, limited infrastructure, and policy constraints, the chapter outlines how these factors exacerbate disparities in neuroanesthetic care in LMICs. Local and international advocacy measures, such as the National Surgical, Obstetric and Anaesthesia Plan and the Global Neurosurgery Initiative, are examined for their contributions to policy integration, workforce training, infrastructure development, and research. Additionally, educational initiatives, like the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists fellowships, International Council for Perioperative Neuroscience Training-standardized neuroanesthesia training, and societal collaborations, are advocated to improve training of neuroanesthesiologists. Technology and telemedicine should also be used to improve neuroanesthesia care and expand services in resource-limited settings. Finally, recommendations for advocacy measures in LMICs to improve neuroanesthesia care are summarized.
