| dc.description | The transition from academic learning to professional practice is a critical and often challenging phase for trainee counselors, particularly in their final year of study. The experiences of University Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) Year Four trainee counselors in preparing for work are explored in this qualitative study. Through the use of semi-structured interviews with seven participants and thematic analysis, the study defines four main themes, coping strategies, work readiness, professionalism, and barriers to work readiness. Although academic programs give trainees a solid understanding, research shows that many of them struggle with stress, lack of confidence, and limited practical experience, especially when it comes to managing cases involving mental health and special needs. Furthermore, the study emphasizes the value of support systems like friends, family, and academic mentors in addition to the significance of soft skills like emotional intelligence, resilience, and adaptability. The Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) and Donald Super’s Career Development Theory serve as the study’s guiding theories and offer a deeper understanding of the career preparation process. Enhancing counselor education, aligning training to industry demands, and assisting trainee counselors in their transition to the professional workforce are all significantly impacted by the findings. | |
