| dc.description | Introduction: Cancer incidence is rising globally with Asia experiencing a high burden. In Malaysia, this necessitates a well-prepared nursing workforce. This study addressed a critical gap in understanding undergraduate nursing students’ knowledge and attitudes toward cancer care, aiming to inform targeted educational interventions. Objectives: This study measured the level of knowledge, identified the level of attitude, and determined the relationship between knowledge and attitude regarding cancer care amongst undergraduate nursing students at UNIMAS. Methodology: A quantitative, cross-sectional design was used to survey 162 randomly selected undergraduate nursing students at UNIMAS. Data was collected using a validated, self-administered questionnaire assessing demographics, knowledge of cancer treatment, and attitudes towards cancer care. Results: Over half of the students (53.7%) demonstrated high knowledge levels, though deficits were noted in areas like chemotherapy and radiotherapy side effect management (46.3% exhibiting low knowledge). A majority (69.1%) reported negative attitudes towards cancer care. No statistically significant correlation was found between knowledge scores and attitudinal scores (rs = -.072, p < .361). Conclusion: While many students possess foundational knowledge, a substantial proportion hold negative attitudes potentially hindering quality patient care. The lack of correlation between knowledge and attitudes underscores the need for educational reform prioritizing not only knowledge acquisition but also the development of positive attitudes and emotional resilience in cancer care. | |
