This thesis covers the research regarding the characterization of coated and uncoated pristine Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) hollow fiber membranes with the developed bamboo derived cellulose/polymer coating using Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) polymers as separate binders and (with/without) Graphene oxide (GO) as additive. The research was conducted in three experimental stages according to coating solution formulation: cellulose/PVDF coating, cellulose/PVA coating and graphene oxide incorporated (cellulose/PVDF and cellulose/PVA) coatings. The membranes were characterized via Fourier transform infrared analysis (FTIR), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-Ray diffraction analysis (XRD), Pure water flux performance, Porosity and Mean pore size analysis. The optimal performing membrane was further tested using real water sources such as rainwater, river water, and peat water for water flux performance and iron removal was evaluated via atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). The focus on iron removal as the targeted heavy metal contaminant is due to its common availability in natural water quality issues, especially in peaty regions of rural Borneo. The FTIR, SEM and XRD results confirmed successful surface modification after coating. Among the coating systems, cellulose/PVA showed to be the best performing formulation. The optimum sample is PV01 at lowest cellulose weightage (0.25g), achieved the highest pure water flux of 860.74 L m⁻² h⁻¹ bar⁻¹ in comparison to the control at 157.89 L m⁻² h⁻¹ bar⁻¹. After filtering the real water sources, the AAS showed no detectable iron in rainwater, complete iron removal from river, and up to 46% iron removal for peat water. The addition of GO reduced performance at midhigh cellulose weightage, likely due to coating density and pore restriction.
