| dc.description | This study investigates the factors influencing individual attitudes toward electricity and petrol conservation among the Malaysian population, a topic of increasing significance due to the environmental, economic, and policy implications of rising energy consumption. The study addresses the growing concern over inefficient energy use, which contributes to environmental degradation, energy insecurity, and increased living costs. Despite various awareness campaigns and policy measures, consumer attitudes remain a critical barrier to effective conservation. Drawing on three prominent theoretical frameworks the Theory of Planned Behaviour (Ajzen, 1991), the Value-Belief-Norm Theory (Stern, 2000), and Social Cognitive Theory (Bandura, 1986) this research explores psychological, social, and economic variables that shape consumer attitudes. A quantitative approach was adopted, involving data collection through structured questionnaires from a sample of 200 respondents across different demographic groups in Malaysia. Key variables examined include affordability, awareness, concern, responsibility, financial resilience, and perceptions of energy subsidies. The findings reveal that awareness and personal responsibility are the most significant predictors of positive conservation attitudes, while affordability and reliance on subsidies negatively influence conservation behaviours. The results also highlight demographic variations, where younger and more educated respondents show stronger pro-conservation tendencies. These insights offer practical implications for policymakers and energy agencies in designing targeted interventions to enhance public engagement in energy-saving behaviours. In conclusion, fostering awareness and accountability, along with reviewing subsidy policies, are essential strategies to support Malaysia’s transition toward sustainable energy consumption. | |
