The mental health and well-being of university students are critical, especially amidst the academic challenges encountered. This study explores the relationships between gratitude, self-compassion, and psychological well-being among Malaysian university students, with a specific focus on the mediating role of self-compassion. Using a cross- sectional correlational design, data were collected from 213 students via validated survey instruments. The results of Pearson correlation indicated significant positive correlations between gratitude and psychological well-being, gratitude and self- compassion, and self-compassion and psychological well-being. Furthermore, self- compassion was found to partially mediate the relationship between gratitude and psychological well-being. These findings underscore the importance of fostering gratitude and self-compassion within university programs to enhance student emotional well-being. Limitations include sampling bias, reliance on self-report measures, and the cross-sectional nature of the study. Despite these limitations, the research contributes valuable insights into the applicability of Western psychological constructs in a non- Western context, suggesting that gratitude and self-compassion are universal constructs that can enhance psychological well-being across diverse cultural settings. The study recommends incorporating gratitude and self-compassion practices into educational frameworks and conducting longitudinal and cross-cultural studies to further understand these dynamics. This research highlights the potential for educational institutions to integrate positive psychology practices, providing a holistic approach to student development and mental health.
