Abstract

This book examines the historical development, institutional evolution and socio-economic contributions of the Sarawak Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority (SALCRA) since its establishment in 1976. Situated within the broader context of rural development in Sarawak, the book documents SALCRA’s role in agricultural land development and rehabilitation, focusing on the development of key agricultural commodities, including rubber, cocoa, pepper and oil palm. Through historical documentation, visual records and accounts of institutional achievements, the book traces the relationship between agricultural development, rural livelihood transformation and community participation. It also examines SALCRA’s initiatives in environmental management, sustainable agricultural practices, economic diversification and community development, reflecting the organisation’s evolving mandate in response to changing development priorities. The publication also situates SALCRA’s contributions within contemporary sustainability agendas and Sarawak’s long-term development aspirations. As a 50th anniversary commemorative work, the book provides a consolidated institutional record of SALCRA’s five decades of operation, offering insights into the role of public development agencies in shaping rural economies, supporting participating communities and advancing sustainable regional development in Sarawak.
