This research explores the exposure of stress experience and stress coping mechanism of Year 3 students in Faculty Cognitive Sciences and Human Development (FCSHD) Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS). A) with Lazarus and Folkman’s (1984) Transactional model of Stress and Coping as the theoretical framework and the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) approach as the conceptual framework, the current study will allow a better understanding on intrapersonal factors in coping aging parents and eventually might shape the development of interventions aimed particularly at improving emotionfocused and problem-focused coping styles as predictor of psychological distress. A crosssectional, correlational quantitative design was applied to 325 students of which data was collected by means of Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10), Brief COPE Inventory, and Social Support Questionnaire (SSQ6). Results of Pearson correlation and regression analysis, respectively, indicated that active coping correlates significantly negatively with psychological distress, highlighting that students who actively manage their stress experience lower distress. There was a positive association between support and distress indicating that people found to distance themselves could use the support reactively rather than preventively. The results of one-way ANOVA revealed that Human Resource Development students reported significantly higher levels of distress when compared with Counselling, Psychology and Cognitive Science. The results illustrate the complexity of the relationships between the coping with stress, academic stress and mental wellbeing, providing practicable implications for interventions targeting on affected students in counselling and academic mentoring services at UNIMAS.
