Abstract
Description
Leaving home to attend university is a significant and often challenging experience, especially if it’s far away. This study aimed to investigate the psychological well-being of university students who study far from home, specifically those from Peninsular Malaysia studying in East Malaysia. Through a semi-structured interview, data was gathered from 8 UNIMAS students who originated from Peninsular Malaysia. The data was then voice recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using Thematic Analysis by Braun & Clarke (2006). The findings highlight several key challenges these students encounter, including adjustment issues, cultural and language barriers, financial difficulties, and homesickness. This study provides valuable insights into the unique struggles faced by university students studying far from home, aiming to inform actions that can reduce these problems and enhance their overall psychological well-being.
