Abstract

Description

This research examines the gender differences in Problematic Internet Pornography Use (PIPU) and its relationship with depression and anxiety among undergraduate students. Previous studies have demonstrated psychological distress as an effect of PIPU in various aspects and demographics such as teenagers and married couples. However, the lack of specificity in the effect of PIPU especially among university students is a big gap in the topic and its surrounding research. The research objectives are to examine the prevalence of PIPU among the demographic of Malaysian university students, to examine the difference in problematic internet pornography use among male and female students and to examine the level of depression and anxiety among students engaged with PIPU. In addition to that, the study also aims to examine the relationship between PIPU and depression as well as examine the relationship between PIPU and anxiety. The study used quantitative survey method to collect data from 152 respondents who are undergraduate students from students from UNIMAS. The instruments used was Beck’s depression Inventory (BDI), Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 Assement (GAD-7) and Problematic Pornography Consumption Scale (PPCS). Findings indicate that there is a significant relationship between PIPU and depression as well as between PIPU and anxiety, Additionally, the findings also indicate there is a significant difference in PIPU between male and female students.
