Abstract
Description
This study investigates the role of emotional intelligence (EQ) among superiors and its influence on employee performance within the hospitality industry in Kuching, Sarawak. As emotional intelligence becomes increasingly recognized as a critical leadership attribute, the study focuses on five core components of EQ—self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills—and their individual and collective effects on employee outcomes. Drawing upon Goleman’s Emotional Intelligence Theory and Self-Determination Theory, this research adopts a quantitative approach using survey data from employees in four- and five-star hotels. Statistical analyses including multiple regression were conducted to test the relationship between each EQ dimension and employee performance. The findings reveal that all five dimensions of EQ have significant and positive effects on employee performance, underscoring the importance of emotionally intelligent leadership in enhancing productivity, job satisfaction, and retention. This research contributes theoretical insights and practical implications for leadership development, emphasizing the need for EQ-based training in the hospitality sector to foster a more engaged and high-performing workforce.
