Background: Smart health care has become a growing innovation in the health sector, with Mobile Medical Devices (MMDs) such as smartwatches and health apps playing a vital role in daily health monitoring. These technologies support home-based care and remote monitoring, enabling students at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) to monitor their health without relying on costly healthcare visits. This qualitative study explored student perceptions and usage of MMDs, aiming to understand the factors influencing their adoption and the challenges faced. Methods: A descriptive research design was used, and data was collected through semi structured interviews with ten purposively selected UNIMAS students who owned MMDs. Interviews were conducted on campus, and participants came from diverse social backgrounds. They discussed their usage of smartwatches and health-related mobile apps and were shown specific features of exemplar devices to prompt deeper discussion. All interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings: Findings revealed that participants generally had a positive perception of MMDs and recognized their benefits for daily health monitoring. Ten key themes emerged, including perceptions of use, influencing factors, and challenges. Despite interest and awareness, students highlighted several barriers such as device complexity, affordability issues, discomfort, technical limitations, and concerns regarding data accuracy and privacy. Conclusion: The study concludes that while MMDs are seen as useful by students, effective adoption requires addressing these obstacles. Recommendations include awareness programs, financial support strategies, and user-friendly device designs to improve MMD usage within the university student population.
