Abstract

Description

The project ‘Harnessing Digital Archives for the Conservation of Sarawak’s Mukun Pantun’ seeks to salvage the dwindling practice of Mukun pantun, a genre of Sarawak Malay poetry that has been closely linked to the culture of Sarawak. This initiative will help tackle the diminishing accessibility and receding practice by developing a sleek and engaging digital resource that aims to serve as a one stop repository of Mukun pantun. The project undertook a systematic approach in which data was gathered from an array of sources, namely social networks and manuscripts, which was subsequently cleaned, sorted, and standardized for future reference. The web-based platform enables pantun lovers, new learners to seek, share, and compose pantun, presenting the content in a visually engaging format that appeals to users. This platform also enables the new pantun to be automated classified based on 11 themes and can generate the reply pantun based on simple recommender technique. Usability Acceptance Testing (UAT)and System Usability Testing (SUS) tests were employed to help ascertain that the system meets its objectives in terms of efficiency and ease of use. It sheds light on the need to adopt modern ways to preserve this local cultural heritage and allows younger individuals to cultivate and learn Sarawak mukun pantun.
