Abstract

Description

This research explores how Artificial Intelligence (AI) enhances strategic foresight and decision-making processes in Maybank Malaysia operating in volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous, brittle, anxious, nonlinear, and incomprehensible (VUCA-BANI) environments. As organizations increasingly face rapid and unpredictable change, the need to become future-ready is more urgent than ever. However, despite growing academic interest in AI and foresight individually, there is a notable gap in the literature concerning how these elements are practically integrated within the Southeast Asian banking sector. Addressing this gap, the study explores how AI improves foresight capabilities, what opportunities arise from combining AI and foresight in VUCA–BANI conditions, and how integration principles can support more effective decision-making. A qualitative research design was adopted. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with two professionals from Maybank’s strategic department, selected through purposive sampling based on their roles in foresight and AI initiatives. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the interview data, leading to the identification of three key themes. The findings revealed that AI strengthens foresight by accelerating horizon scanning, improving scenario planning, and supporting continuous strategic monitoring. Moreover, the integration of AI and foresight helps Maybank navigate uncertainty and complexity, enabling agile and proactive responses. Instead of a rigid framework, the study identified five practical principles, which include leadership support, cross-functional collaboration, feedback loops, human-AI balance, and an embedded strategic culture that enables effective integration. Theoretically, the research extends foresight and dynamic capabilities literature by showing how AI transforms foresight into a continuous, adaptive process. Practically, it provided a model for how banks can include AI and foresight into strategic initiatives to improve resilience. The study recommends that future research expand to other sectors and regions and adopt mixed methods to further validate and extend these findings.
