| dc.description | This study compares the pre-COVID (2015–2019) and post-COVID (2020–2023) years to examine the productivity performance of airlines in the Asia-Pacific and European regions. The study measures how airline productivity has changed over time using the Malmquist Total Factor Productivity Index. The impact of key operational inputs on productivity results was examined, including staff, fleet size, and Revenue Passenger Kilometres (RPK). Tobit regression models were used for each period, taking into consideration the censored character of the Total Factor Productivity Change (TFPCH) scores, to more thoroughly investigate the factors that influence productivity. The findings show that productivity decreased significantly during the pandemic and then gradually recovered, with two spectacular post-COVID results: Asia-Pacific airlines rebounded strongly in 2022/2023 (TFPCH = 2.216) driven by major gains in EFFCH, SECH, and PECH, while European airlines achieved their highest TFPCH of 2.858 in 2021/2022, largely due to exceptional TECHCH. The Tobit analysis notably shows that decisions about the staff and fleet had different impacts on productivity before and after COVID. For airline managers and legislators looking to improve operational resilience and create focused strategies for long-term growth in the aviation industry during a crisis, these findings offer crucial insights. | |
