Abstract
Description
The Integration of Geographic Information Sistem in criminal mapping and social issues especially regarding drug abuse is still lacking. This study examines the misuse of drugs among youths and home-breaking cases in the Northeast District of Penang in 2013 until 2015. The three specific objectives of this study are to identify the pattern of drug abuse cases and property crime; analyzing hot spot areas of drug abuse and property crime cases, and analyzing the correlations of drug cases and property crime cases. Methods used are Average Nearest Neighbor (ANN), Getis Ord, Ordinary Least Square Regression (OLS) and Moran’s I. The findings show that the pattern of drug abuse and home-breaking cases in 2013 to 2015 is fully clustered. Based on the z-score value <-2.58 and p-value, p <0.001 shows a high significant value. The hot spot area of drug cases among youths for the three years of the study included the area of Jelutong Police Station, Jalan Patani and Ayer Itam. The hot spot area of the home-breaking case involves Jelutong Police Station, Sungai Nibong, Dato Keramat, Bandar Baru and Tanjung Tokong. The findings also found that positive column correlations between drug abuse cases and home break cases for the three years of the study were conducted and the Moran’s I index value was I> 1. The area of drug abuse hotspots among youth takes place in a high proportion of youth population. The hotspot areas of drug abuse cases and home-breaking cases are identified in the downtown area and near the city center as well as high population areas
