This research aimed to examine the relationship between self-care and burnout levels among trainee counsellors. A total of 160 counselling students from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) participated in the study. The respondents were selected using stratified random sampling based on their year of study. The research design applied in this study was correlational. Two main instruments were used: the Self-Care Assessment for Wellness (SCAW) and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). The SCAW was used to measure the levels of self-care based on six subscales: physical, psychological, emotional, spiritual, workplace or professional, and balance self-care. Meanwhile, the MBI was used to measure the overall level of burnout experienced by the respondents. The data collected were analysed using Spearman’s Rho Correlation Coefficient and Bootstrap Multiple Linear Regression Analysis. The findings revealed a significant relationship between overall self-care and burnout (r = .204, p < .01). Specifically, psychological self-care (r = .234, p < .01), emotional self-care (r = .206, p < .01), and workplace or professional self-care (r = .193, p < .05) were found to have a weak but significant relationship with burnout. Bootstrap regression analysis showed that psychological self-care (B = .486, p < .01), emotional self-care (B = .286, p < .01), and workplace or professional self-care (B = .285, p < .01) were significant predictors of burnout. However, physical, spiritual, and balance self-care did not show a significant relationship with burnout. The implications of this study are discussed in both theoretical and practical contexts, particularly in highlighting the need for culturally relevant self-care models and proactive strategies for burnout prevention among trainee counsellors. Recommendations for future studies include increasing the sample size, expanding to other universities, and updating measurement instruments to reflect current professional and cultural realities.
