Recycling Heroes: A Gamified Learning Experience using Roblox with AI Chatbot Guidance

dc.descriptionThe purpose of this thesis is to design and evaluate a gamified learning environment, “Recycling Heroes” that leverages Roblox to help students understand waste management and recycling concepts from the Year 6 Science curriculum. An AI chatbot powered by the Gemini API will deliver real-time feedback and guidance to students based on their in game interactions. This method aims to increase interest, quantify past knowledge, and assess learning by incorporating quests and quizzes into the game. To preserve privacy, all in-game data will be securely saved to Roblox’s Datastore service. Students rated the game as entertaining, motivating, and simple to use, according to quantitative results that demonstrated high system usability (SUS average = 4.6/5) and a strong user experience (UEQ average ≈ 6.1/7). With average scores of 4.7/5 on all items, the Educational Effectiveness Questionnaire (EEQ) demonstrated strong agreement on improved engagement and learning. Consistency in responses was validated by standard deviation analysis, particularly in learning enjoyment (SD = 0.0). According to these results, Recycling Heroes is a useful and entertaining teaching resource for elementary school pupils.
