| dc.description | The study aimed to identify the relationship between sleep quality and both verbal and visual working memory performance among undergraduate students at the Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS). Utilising a correlational research design, the study involved 30 participants who completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) to assess their sleep quality, the Reading Span Task (RSPAN) for verbal working memory, and Sternberg’s Search Task for visual working memory. The data were analyzed using Pearson correlation to determine the strength and direction of the relationships. Results indicated a significant positive correlation between sleep quality and verbal working memory performance, suggesting that better sleep quality was associated with improved verbal working memory. Conversely, a weaker, though still positive, correlation was observed between sleep quality and visual working memory. These findings highlighted the critical role of sleep in cognitive functions, particularly in verbal memory processes. The study contributed to the broader understanding of how sleep affected different types of working memory and underscored the importance of good sleep hygiene for cognitive health. Future research should explore the underlying mechanisms of these relationships and consider longitudinal designs to examine causal links. | |
