This thesis presents results of research conducted to show the application of advanced oxidation processes otherwise known as photocatalysis for the removal of three major recalcitrant organic pollutants from pre-treated palm oil mill effluent. The scope of this thesis is twofold: (i) the utilization of simple slurry photoreactor system at laboratory scale and (ii) the development of immobilized photoreactor system, both for removal of COD, BOD and Color from pre-treated palm oil mill effluent. The first component of this research involves modelling and optimization of slurry photoreactor system for the photocatalytic degradation of pre-treated palm oil mill effluent for COD, BOD and Color removal. The optimization has been conducted using design expert software. In addition, analysis of variance has also been carried out, as incorporated in the design expert software to determine the statistical significance of the interaction effects in the slurry photoreactor. The interaction effects studied include initial pH, catalyst dosage and reaction time. The results obtained from this analysis confirm that these parameters have profound effect on the removal of these pollutants and thus has vital application in the design of photoreactor systems for palm oil mill effluent degradation. The second component of this research is the development of immobilized photoreactor system. The photoreactor rig has been locally designed and fabricated and has been operated to degrade palm oil mill effluent. The immobilized photoreactor has been optimized through kinetic studies of effects of various parameters: dissolved oxygen, initial concentration and pH value. In addition, the kinetic data obtained has been used to calculate the electrical energy per order needed to operate the immobilized photoreactor over specific time period. This is an important parameter as it allows for determination of energy consumption of the reactor and can subsequently be used to upgrade the photoreactor to larger scale. Lastly, the conceptual models and data obtained from both v slurry and immobilized photoreactors will provide a framework to evaluate the efficiency of this reactors for palm oil mill effluent degradation. The findings from this thesis will also provide context for future investigations.
