dc.description1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) is a sensational issue covered by the mainstream and the alternative media after news on alleged misused of the state fund by several high-profile individuals in Malaysia and overseas. This study examined framing analysis on 1MDB news in mainstream and alternative news media in Malaysia. The objectives of the study are to: (1) identify the proportion of episodic and thematic frames on 1MDB news in mainstream and alternative news media; (2) identify the frame dimensions in the headlines of the 1MDB news into: constitution and jurisprudence, political, economic, crime and justice and morality dimensions; (3) analyse the words choices related to the main frame dimensions of the news headlines used in 1MDB news in mainstream and alternative news media; (4) analyse the valence in the content of the 1MDB news; and (5) identify the words choices used to portray positive and negative valence in articles on 1MDB news in mainstream and alternative news media. This study has analysed 849 news articles published in the mainstream and alternative news media from July till September 2016 were analysed (34 from Borneo Post; 185 from The Star; 630 from MalaysiaKini). For the proportion of episodic and thematic news content, analysis revealed that the news coverage of 1MDB tended to be more in episodic frames that report specific events. Only 9% of news articles were thematic and focused on the broader context. As for the frame dimensions in the news headlines, analysis showed that the most common frames were the constitution and jurisprudence, and political frames. The morality frame was used the least in all three news media because of the objectivity of news reporting. As for valence, analysis showed that the negative valence was high in The Star and MalaysiaKini while positive valence was high in Borneo Post on 1MDB issues. The mainstream news media tended to favour 1MDB issue while MalaysiaKini was focused on the illicit money ii laundering from 1MDB in various countries as run-of-the-mill news stories. Fewer 1MDB news articles were published in mainstream news media than in alternative media, and the latter kept the 1MDB issue alive and controversial. The mainstream news media intentionally framed the Malaysian government’s effort in handling the 1MDB money laundering issue in a positive light while the alternative news media’s framing of 1MDB issues appears to provide a comprehensive and transparent coverage of the issue which eventually creates doubts among readers as to the government’s integrity in handling the issue.
