The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of folklore as the main storyline in ASEAN animation content. Internationally, animation giant like Disney had proven that storytelling can be re-interpreted and reintroduced. The popularity of folklore makes it easy for the audience to accept the animation. Folklore and legends have always been the main reference in the development and storytelling of animation. The Disney Studio film series features European slides such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1934), Cinderella (1950), Alice in Wonderland (1951) and ASIA-inspired diaries such as Mulan (1998), Aladdin (1992). Even rival studios eg: Dreamwork have adapted folklore to their animations such as 'Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas (2003)' as well as Fox Animation Studios 'Anastasia (1997)'. Folklore adaptation and storytelling in animated content are seen as effective formulas for filming. This has been proven in ASEAN countries, where folklore adaptations have become a popular writing material for animated scripts. The Malaysian animated series 'The Tortoise and the Monkey (1987) based on Tales of Mousedeer' (Hassan Muthalib). Thailand animated film 'The Adventure of Sudsakorn (1976)' is based on the 'Phra Aphai Mani' (Payuk Ngaokrachang) and the Vietnam animated series 'Đáng đời thằng Cáo (1959)' which is also referred from folklore. This phenomenon needs to be viewed from a larger context. For example, one of the earliest studios in the ASEAN region was established in Vietnam in 1955. After the emigration of animators to the USSR in the late 50s to continue their studies at the Soyzmultfilm studio, the local government established a film production of the 'Hanoi Cartoon Studio'. Although trained in the USSR, the studio still vi makes the storytelling and legend a major source of animation. This further reinforces the fact that folklore was the main subject of script-writing in that era.
