| dc.description | Understanding proverbs essentially requires high-level logical thinking due to their metaphorical nature. The lexical meaning of proverbs does not reflect their actual meaning, making it crucial to employ an appropriate approach to interpret them in depth and comprehensively. This study aims to examine the application of the inquisitive semantics approach by Jalaluddin (2014) in analyzing the meanings of Malay proverbs contained in the KSSM Bahasa Melayu Form 4 and Form 5 textbooks. This approach is proposed as an alternative method for learning Malay proverbs at the upper secondary level. The inquisitive semantics framework consists of three levels of analysis, namely script semantics, resonance semantics, and inquisitive semantics, which collectively examine the meanings of proverbs at the surface, literal, and contextual levels, as well as uncover the underlying philosophy and wisdom of native speakers. This study employed a qualitative research design through content analysis. The data were drawn entirely from the KSSM Bahasa Melayu Form 4 and Form 5 textbooks. A total of 180 proverbs were identified and categorized into four main themes: Unity, Education, Customs and Heritage, and Natural Resources. Two proverbs from each theme were analyzed in depth to highlight the cultural values, philosophy, and wisdom of the Malay community. The findings indicate that the application of the inquisitive semantics approach enables a systematic, structured, and comprehensive analysis of proverbs. The study demonstrates that Malay proverbs not only serve as a medium of communication and linguistic embellishment but also convey values, teachings, and cultural knowledge within Malay society. In-depth analysis also reveals the integration of multidisciplinary aspects such as botany, ecology, geography, vii and sociology (bagai aur dengan tebing), zoology, education, and Islamic studies (hendak belajar berenang dapatkan itik, hendak belajar memanjat dapatkan tupai), as well as cultural anthropology and traditional Malay architecture (langkah bendul). The study further emphasizes the suitability of the inquisitive semantics approach for integration with the teaching and learning strategies proposed in KSSM Bahasa Melayu, including contextual learning, inquiry-based learning, higher-order thinking skills, and cross-curricular elements. The implications suggest that this approach may serve as a guide for teachers in designing more comprehensive and meaningful learning activities related to proverbs. Overall, this study concludes that the inquisitive semantics approach functions not only as a tool for analyzing the meaning of proverbs but also as a pedagogical medium that integrates linguistic, cultural, philosophical, cognitive, and educational dimensions, while fostering appreciation of the significance of proverbs as cultural heritage. | |
