Abstract
Description
This study aimed to explore the complex interplay between the academic performance and emotional intelligence (EI) in the particular setting of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS). A cross-sectional study was conducted on the undergraduate students of UNIMAS. A self- administered Schutte Self-Report Emotional Intelligence Test (SSEIT) was used to obtain data from students with different academic achievements and their emotional intelligence test scores. A total of 133 sets of questionnaires were collected. Pearson Correlation was employed to identify the relationship between emotional intelligence and academic performance among undergraduate students. The findings of the research showed that there is a significant relationship between EI and academic performances among students of the UNIMAS. The study highlights practical implications for educational practices, encouraging the incorporation of emotional intelligence training in educational settings. The results of the study can provide insights into how students can effectively manage their emotional wellbeing with their academic responsibilities, leading to improved self- and social awareness and overall academic performance.
