Abstract

Description

Teaching speaking would be more interesting and effective if it is based on a suitable learning strategy. However, the teaching of speaking skills in our classroom is not given enough emphasis in our language classroom. As a result, English language students still could not master the language particularly communicative skills even learning the language since primary schools. The objectives of this study are to identify the impact of OPS English learning strategy in learning speaking skill among Form 1 students and to investigate teachers’ perceptions on the OPS-English programme by the Ministry of Education (MOE) with the objectives to improve the English proficiency particularly in oral and aural skills among the Malaysian students as suggested in the Malaysian Education Blueprint (MEB). This is a mixed method of quasi-experimental research which involved 60 students from a secondary school in Petra Jaya, Kuching. The data were collected through a pretest-posttest speaking assessment and interview from the teachers involved. Data were analyzed using a non-parametric The Mann-Whitney test to measure the independent t-test and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test to measure the paired dependent t-test. The findings showed that both teaching methods could help to improve students’ oral proficiency but after the intervention, it was proven that OPS-English learning strategy could facilitate better learning in speaking skills. Judging from the findings it can be said that OPS-English learning strategy is an effective teaching strategy to teach speaking and should be used by the English language teachers as an alternative strategy in teaching speaking.
