Abstract

Description

The Vehicle Ignition System is a crucial component for students studying Automotive Technology. While previous research has primarily focused on theory-based subjects, studies involving technical subjects like this are limited. The first objective of this study is to explore the metacognitive processes students use when solving problems related to the vehicle ignition system. The second objective is to identify the types of metacognitions among students. The final aim is to develop a metacognitive model for students in relation to the vehicle ignition system. This study adopts a qualitative research approach, using a case study design and thematic analysis as the coding technique. Data collection methods included interviews and observations. The findings revealed one main theme, three subthemes, twelve categories, fourteen subcategories, eleven elements, and two sub- elements. The results indicate that troubleshooting the Vehicle Ignition System positively influences academic achievement and has a significant impact on rural communities. However, due to the use of non-probability sampling, the findings cannot be generalised. Future research is recommended to employ a probability sampling approach to facilitate generalisation. The contribution of this research to the field of Automotive Technology is linked to social network theory, which highlights the influence of strong ties and individual nodes within a network on academic success. Conversely, weak ties were found to have a negative relationship with academic achievement. Implications for educational policies suggest that leveraging connections within social networks, such as those between parents, schools, and peers, can be an effective strategy for enhancing students' academic performance
