Abstract
Description
Language is a very significant element to facilitate the process of conveying information to someone. One of the language variations that is rarely spoken is the subtle language. Subtle language is a language phenomenon that becomes a medium to convey a message implicitly. This research is conducted to identify the subtle language such as words or phrase found in the utterances of the Iban community of Sebuyau, Sarawak based on Allan and Burridge's (1991) suggestions on framework of cathegorising euphemism. In addition, this paper applies the conceptual metaphor approach (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980) to analyse the word or phrase units for each of the subtle language domains. The conceptual metaphor plays a role in interpreting the abstract domain to a more concrete domain. The conceptual metaphor comprises a set of mappings containing the source domain and the target domain. This study also analysed the correlation between culture and the subtle language of the Iban Sebuyau community based on Keesing's (1970) Cultural Antrophology theory. This study applies qualitative method through structured interviews to obtain data through 10 female and 10 male informants. As a result, this study obtained 20 data through four domains, namely the domains of fear, death, trust, and masculinity. The results of the study showed that the data of the subtle language is closely linked to the framework of conceptual metaphors such as orientation metaphor, ontological metaphor and structural metaphor. The conceptual metaphor approach suggested by Lakoff and Johnson (1980) shows that the subtle language of the Iban Sebuyau community is highly correlated with the beliefs of the Iban community. The relationship between subtle language and cultural context of Iban Sebuyau community indicates that the belief system and respect for other nature are highly emphasised in every word.
