Abstract

Description

This study aimed to determine the relationship between Instagram addiction and self- esteem among university undergraduates. Instagram addiction is defined as a psychological dependence on Instagram that interferes with important tasks and activities, producing negative consequences. Self-esteem refers to positive or negative attitudes towards oneself, as well as an assessment of one's own thoughts and feelings regarding oneself in general. The study employs a cross-sectional quantitative research method, involving 106 university undergraduates in Malaysia who completed the Instagram Addiction Scale (TIAS-12) and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES). An independent t-test was conducted to measure the significant difference between genders on Instagram Feed Addiction and Instagram Stories Addiction. The results indicate no significant difference between genders for both Instagram Feed Addiction and Instagram Stories Addiction (p > 0.05). Pearson's correlation was used to measure the relationship between the components of Instagram Feed Addiction and Instagram Stories Addiction with self-esteem. The findings reveal significant but weak correlations between salience, mood modification, relapse, withdrawal, and conflict of Instagram Feed Addiction and self-esteem (p < 0.05, r > -1). However, the relationship between tolerance of Instagram Feed Addiction and self-esteem is not significant and shows a weak correlation (p > 0.05, r > -1). Similarly, for Instagram Stories Addiction, there are significant but weak correlations between mood modification, relapse, withdrawal, and conflict with self-esteem (p < 0.05, r > -1). However, salience and tolerance of Instagram Stories Addiction do not show significant correlations with self- esteem (p > 0.05, r > -1).
