Background: Family engagement is a key component of patient-centred care, promoting better communication, patient safety, satisfaction, and health outcomes. Families support patients emotionally, physically, and in decision-making, contributing to holistic care. For nursing students, understanding and promoting family engagement is crucial. Their perceptions and attitudes are shaped by education, clinical experience, and institutional culture. Objectives: To determine the perceptions and attitude of UNIMAS undergraduate nursing students regarding the role of caregivers in family engagement. Moreover, to examine the relationship between UNIMAS undergraduate nursing students’ perception and attitude toward the caregiver’s role in family engagement. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted through a simple random sampling. The data was collected from UNIMAS nursing students(n=139). The perception and attitude of UNIMAS nursing students toward the importance of family engagement in patient care will be measured by using 24-item questions on Families' Importance in Nursing Care–Nurses' Attitudes (FINC-NA).Results: Findings showed that most UNIMAS nursing students had poor perception toward the caregiver's role in family involvement in patient care, where the total median score was 26 (IQR =18). Furthermore, most of them showed a poor positive attitude and low negative attitude towards the caregiver's role. The total median score for positive attitude is 26 (IQR =18), while the total median score for negative attitude is 14 (IQR =4). Spearman Rank Order Correlation has been used to assess the relationship between the variables, and it has been determined that there was a strong positive correlation between the perception and positive attitude, 𝑟𝑠(139) = .671, p < .001. However, the analysis of the relationship between perception and negative attitude reveals that there was a weak negative correlation between the two variables, 𝑟𝑠 (139) = -.228, p =. 007.Conclusion: This study concluded that iv UNIMAS nursing students have poor perception and attitudes toward the caregiver's role in family involvement. This study emphasises nursing education's need to incorporate family-centred care principles, practical training, and supportive clinical environments to enhance student preparedness for engaging caregivers in patient care.
