| dc.description | Energy has been a fundamental driver of human civilisation, economic growth and technological advancement. However, the increasing demand for energy, historically driven by fossil fuel consumption, has contributed to significant environmental challenges, including climate change, air pollution, resource depletion and ecosystem degradation. This inaugural lecture examines the evolution of applied energy and its relationship with the environment, tracing developments from traditional energy systems and industrialisation to contemporary efforts towards sustainable and low-carbon energy solutions. It highlights the current challenges and opportunities associated with renewable energy, energy efficiency, energy storage, waste-to-energy technologies, carbon management and the integration of advanced digital technologies in energy systems. Particular attention is given to the role of applied research and technological innovation in bridging scientific knowledge with practical applications that address real-world energy and environmental problems. Looking towards the near future, the lecture explores emerging technologies, interdisciplinary collaboration and sustainable strategies that can enhance energy security, improve resource efficiency and reduce environmental impacts. It also emphasises the importance of collaboration among universities, industry, government and communities in translating research outcomes into meaningful societal benefits. Ultimately, this lecture advocates an integrated approach to energy development in which technological progress, environmental protection and socioeconomic well-being are pursued collectively. By connecting lessons from the past with present challenges and future possibilities, it aims to establish a research vision that advances sustainable energy solutions and contributes to a more resilient, resource-efficient and environmentally responsible future. | |
