Knowledge, Attitude and Practice towards Alcohol Consumption among the Iban Community at Lubau Baru Longhouse, Sarawak

dc.descriptionBackground: Alcohol consumption is a common cultural practice among the Iban community in Sarawak, often associated with social and traditional events. However, excessive or habitual intake poses significant health and social risks. Understanding knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to alcohol use within this population is essential for assessing potential health implications and guiding public health interventions. Objectives: To examine the level of knowledge, attitude and practice towards alcohol consumption among the Iban community at Lubau Baru Longhouse, as well as to examine the relationship between knowledge, attitude and practice of alcohol consumption among the Iban community at Lubau Baru Longhouse, Sarawak. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted through a simple random sampling. The data was collected from Lubau Baru Longhouse residents (n=98). The 15 items on knowledge, 15 items on attitudes questionnaire and 10 items on Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT) towards alcohol consumption. Result: Findings showed that most of the respondents possessed moderate knowledge, 84 respondents (85.7%), poor attitudes, 50 respondents (51%), and the majority had low-risk practice, 44 respondents (44.9%), towards alcohol consumption. Further analysis revealed no significant correlation between knowledge and attitude (r = 0.014, n = 98, p = 0.893), knowledge and practice (r = 0.076, n = 98, p = 0.460). However, a weak correlation between attitude and practice (r = 0.20, n = 98, p = 0.064) towards alcohol consumption. Conclusion: This study concluded that Lubau Baru Longhouse residents had moderate knowledge, poor attitudes and low-risk practice towards alcohol consumption. Strengthening health education and targeted interventions can enhance understanding and promote responsible consumption. These insights contribute to the development of culturally sensitive strategies for alcohol-related public health initiatives.
