Abstract
Description
Diabetes mellitus (DM) has significantly reduced the quality of life and increased mortality as well as causing a global health burden, which require healthcare personnels, especially nurses, to be involved in the care of patients with DM. The previous studies have revealed gaps in nursing students’ knowledge and attitude on DM management. This study aims to examine knowledge and attitude towards management of people with DM among UNIMAS undergraduate nursing students. A cross-sectional study was conducted among UNIMAS undergraduate nursing students. A total of 163 participants were selected through a simple random sampling. A structured item questionnaire adopted 23 items of the Diabetes Knowledge Test (DKT2) and 9 items of the Attitude towards Diabetes Questionnaire for data collection to assess level of knowledge and attitude towards DM management. The findings showed that majority (62%) of participants exhibited a moderate level of knowledge on diabetes management, with a total mean score was 14.79 ± 3.90. Besides, majority (64.4%) of participants exhibited a positive level of attitude on diabetes management with a total mean score was 38.88 ± 3.56. The analysis showed there was a weak positive correlation coefficient between the knowledge and attitude [rs (162) = .163, p < 0.05]. The current study has highlighted a concern regarding moderate knowledge of DM management. Therefore, it is vital to emphasise the effort to overcome this issue through educational interventions such as material of education, workshops, training, and seminars to enhance the knowledge and attitude towards management of DM among nursing students.
