This study explores the phenomenon of career mismatch among tertiary-level graduates in public universities, focusing on the factors that lead graduates to pursue careers misaligned with their academic qualifications. Grounded in the Social Learning Theory of Career Decision-Making and the Theory of Work Adjustment, the research investigates four key areas: the criteria influencing career choices, the contributing factors to career mismatch, the challenges faced by graduates when seeking field-related employment, and the effects of mismatched careers on job satisfaction and development. Using a qualitative case study approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven public university graduates employed in careers unrelated to their fields of study. Thematic analysis revealed that economic pressures, family influence, lack of market exposure, and skill gaps were primary drivers of career mismatch. Participants also reported emotional strain, loss of skill relevance, and diminished motivation, yet some developed resilience and adaptability in unfamiliar roles. Findings underscore the need for enhanced university support, practical skill-building, and policy reforms to bridge the gap between academic preparation and labor market expectations. The study contributes to the discourse on graduate employability and offers insights for educational institutions, employers, and policymakers aiming to support sustainable career development among graduates.
